European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
